Background
The Cancer Information & Population Health Resource (CIPHR)
The Cancer Information & Population Health Resource (CIPHR) program is a central component of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Outcomes Research Program, and has extensive experience in using secondary data for patient-centered outcomes research, including outcomes, patterns of care, innovation diffusion, comparative effectiveness, health services research, and organization studies. CIPHR incorporates a world class computing system, leveraging strengths in data resources, systems for data management and project tracking, and expert staff to support a broad range of research using these data and systems. Beyond these primary research resources, CIPHR, as part of its multidisciplinary focus, maintains numerous collaborative relationships with researchers and leadership in nearly all University Schools, and numerous Departments.

Established in 1974, the UNC Lineberger is a matrix cancer center at one of the nation’s premier public universities and a national leader in cancer research. UNC ranks among the nation’s top 15 universities and systems in both National Cancer Institute (NCI) funding and in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding. The UNC Lineberger is in its third decade of funding from the State of North Carolina and its fourth decade of funding from the NCI Cancer Centers program. The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s mission is to reduce cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training, and outreach. In pursuit of that mission, the Center has four major program objectives:
- To foster interdisciplinary basic cancer research;
- To develop interdisciplinary and translational clinical research and care programs through the organization of multidisciplinary care and the promotion of the research interface among the basic science, clinical, and population science disciplines;
- To develop a population sciences research program that spans epidemiology, early detection, prevention, and behavioral science; and
- To create training and outreach opportunities in all areas for faculty, fellows, and students.
